Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Forestry resources play a crucial role in sustaining economic livelihoods, particularly in rural communities where timber, fuelwood, non-timber forest products (NTFPs), and medicinal plants contribute significantly to household incomes. Doma Local Government Area in Nasarawa State is endowed with vast forest reserves that support agriculture, trade, and ecological balance (Aliyu & Musa, 2024). However, the increasing rate of deforestation, illegal logging, and poor forest management threatens the sustainability of these resources and the economic well-being of local communities (Abdullahi & Yakubu, 2023).
Globally, sustainable forestry practices have been recognized as a means of fostering rural development while maintaining environmental stability. Countries like Brazil and Indonesia have adopted policies that promote agroforestry, afforestation, and conservation efforts to protect forest resources while supporting livelihoods (Ibrahim & Usman, 2024). In Nigeria, however, weak policy implementation, urbanization, and climate change have led to rapid forest depletion, affecting both the ecosystem and economic opportunities for rural dwellers (Bello & Ahmed, 2023).
The contribution of forestry resources to economic livelihoods extends beyond timber production. Activities such as honey production, herbal medicine extraction, and eco-tourism provide employment opportunities for many. However, in Doma, lack of investment in forestry management, encroachment on forest lands for agriculture, and weak government intervention have limited the sector’s potential for economic growth. This study seeks to evaluate the relationship between forestry resources and economic livelihoods in Doma, examining how sustainable forestry practices can enhance local income levels and environmental conservation.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the abundance of forestry resources in Doma, economic livelihoods remain fragile due to deforestation, poor forest governance, and overdependence on unsustainable harvesting methods (Usman & Bello, 2024). Many local inhabitants rely on forest resources for survival, yet the depletion of these resources threatens long-term economic stability. Additionally, illegal logging and weak enforcement of forestry regulations have further exacerbated resource depletion. If these challenges are not addressed, the region may face both ecological crises and economic hardships.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
To examine the contribution of forestry resources to economic livelihoods in Doma Local Government Area.
To analyze the challenges affecting sustainable forestry management in the region.
To propose policy recommendations for enhancing forestry-based economic activities.
1.4 Research Questions
How do forestry resources contribute to economic livelihoods in Doma?
What are the major challenges hindering sustainable forestry management in the area?
What policies can enhance forestry-based economic development in Doma?
1.5 Research Hypotheses
Forestry resources have a significant impact on economic livelihoods in Doma.
Unsustainable forestry practices negatively affect economic opportunities in the region.
Effective forestry management policies can improve economic livelihoods in Doma.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is important for policymakers, environmentalists, and local communities, providing insights into how forestry resources contribute to economic livelihoods. The findings will assist in formulating policies to promote sustainable forestry management while enhancing income-generating activities for rural dwellers. Additionally, the study contributes to discussions on environmental sustainability, emphasizing the need for afforestation and conservation efforts.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on forestry resources and economic livelihoods in Doma Local Government Area, Nasarawa State. It does not extend to other regions or non-forestry-related economic activities. Limitations may include difficulties in obtaining accurate data on deforestation rates and forestry income sources.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
Forestry Resources: Natural vegetation, trees, and non-timber products that contribute to economic and ecological sustainability.
Economic Livelihoods: Means of earning a living through forestry-related activities such as logging, honey production, and herbal medicine trade.
Sustainable Forestry: The management and conservation of forest resources to meet present needs without compromising future generations' ability to benefit from them.
